CBT San Diego

Cognitive behavioral therapy (or “CBT”) is known to be effective in treating depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and thought disorders. Practitioners of CBT operate from the point of view that people’s moods and behaviors are directly related to their patterns of thought. If a person has negative thinking it affects his or her mood, self-esteem, behavior, and possibly their physical state. With cognitive behavioral therapy, a goal is to help people learn to recognize negative thought patterns, think through whether or not they are valid, and revise them with ways of thinking that are healthier.

Psychotherapists and counselors who use CBT to help clients also work with them on behavior change, as sometimes negative behaviors come from thinking patterns that are dysfunctional.

Negative thought patterns and dysfunctional behaviors make people vulnerable to painful, destructive moods and this can become a self reinforcing pattern.

If negative behaviors can be changed, changes in mood can follow.

Many studies about cognitive behavioral therapy have demonstrated that CBT is as effective (or even more effective) than the use of antidepressants for people suffering from depression.
